Kite Spars - Does it Really Make a Difference?

Spars are the skeletal system of the sport kite and can have the largest impact on flight performance and the wind range that the kite can fly in.

Today’s modern sport kites can travel at speeds as high as 120 mph, fly in the lightest of winds, create enough force to pull their pilots across the field, and can perform heart stopping dives, loops, figure eights, and mid-air hovers. A large portion of these capabilities is accomplished through the high-tech skeletal structure or the frame of the kites.

At Wind Wizards, we want to guide you in your selection of the correct kite and kite frame that is best for you and your local conditions.

The framework or skeletal structure of the kite will greatly affect the overall performance of the kite and what you will be able to do with that kite.

Flight loads on kites can cause spars to bend.  As the spars bend, the flow of air around the kite can change which decreases control.  While a certain amount of bending of the spars can be tolerated and, if properly engineered into the kite, can actually enhance performance, excessive bending makes control very difficult. Therefore, kite spars must resist bending to make control possible. Generally speaking, the stiffer the spar, the better the control.

These high - tech components go together to make a kite that more user friendly, easier to launch, more durable, and simply more fun to fly. Understanding a kite framework will allow you to make a selection easier.
