Kiteboarding in the Kansas City area has become possible with kiters spending time with those interested in learning this exciting new sport. Kiteboarding is a dynamic new water sport that combines the best of windsurfing, surfing, skateboarding, wakeboarding, and traction kiting. It is both exhilarating and challenging and the ultimate water sport. It’s surprisingly easy to learn and once your up and running, the learning curve is quick.
You do not need to be an expert in water sports to give it a go, as long as you are fit and up for it, you can be on the water in no time. You can kiteboard in light and strong winds, go up wind and down wind, kiteboard in waves and flat water (lakes) and get big airs whenever you want. Once you have experienced the thrill and freedom that kiteboarding gives you, you’ll be out on the water every chance you get. Many feel that kiteboarding is only for the super athletic or daredevils. Fortunately, this is not true. Kiteboarding does not require massive amounts of strength or nerves of steel. It will require a person to be in moderately good physical condition and a good level of comfort in the water. Since large kite can produce a large amount of power, it is crucial that a beginner learn safe and responsible uses of all equipment.
Kiteboard enthusiast Sean Beaver is dedicated to the safe enjoyment of kiteboarding. For this reason he offers his personal (meaning not affiliated with the Kansas City Kite Club) assistance in getting into the sport. He helps people understand the skills needed to kiteboard, wind directions, how to set up and check equipment, water launching, dragging, kite control, and starting on your board. Smaller “trainer kites” can be used on land as a first step in learning kite control, and kiteboarding. This is where you can learn the basic controls of the kite on land with a trainer set up with a bar. It is a small (practically indestructible) kite that will not pull too hard so you can practice in a safe and controlled manner. In addition, there are several videos/DVD’s that can be used as tools to help new kiters learn this exciting new sport.
Sean has been land and water kiting for years and is working towards Professional Air Sports Association level certification to be completed in the future. For more information about the PASA go to their website at http://www.pasakiteboarding.org
Kiteboarding is conducted at several area lakes (weather permitting) and varies with season, schedules, and other issues. Dates and times vary so contact us for more information about kiteboarding in general.
